Tune in tonight from 4:00 to 6:00 for some jazz, funk, soul, folk, pop, electronic… you know the drill… all on vinyl record!
It’s my favourite show of the month. As you know, the last Wednesday of every month, I bring out the big guns, packing up a few of my favourite vinyl records just for you.
I’ve got around 40 records lined up for tonight including some classic jazz recordings, some new funk and soul, some new Canadian pop and a few oddities in between.
Tune in from 4:00 to 6:00 for a laid-back, good feeling time with headphones on.
As always, check this page during the show for a full playlist.

Let’s share some good music together. Tonight, I’ve got 30 or 40 vinyl records lined up for the show. As always, I’ll never be able to play them all, but I’ll be sure to play some great ones. I’ve got everything from some classic Freddie Hubbard soul jazz to some new-school ’60s-style funk from Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, some brand new Beirut, a track or two from one of the highest selling albums of all time…
Tune in from 4:00 to 6:00, kick back and enjoy!

This past Sunday, I had the pleasure of seeing the incredible Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings; a Brooklyn-based soul/funk ensemble comprised of a bad-ass horn section, a tight-as-hell rhythm section, a soulful backup vocal section and one of the baddest vocalists keeping soul alive today! The 55-year-old Sharon had more energy than the mostly-university-aged crowd that made it out to see her – dancing up a storm, getting the audience involved and pulling people up on stage. At only around 5 feet high, she is a commanding presence!
Wow! What a show!
Since it’s only been a few days since this immaculate performance, and since it happens to be Long-Play Wednesday, it only makes sense that I make a huge dedication to this impressive band. Tonight, for the first hour of WPIT?!, I’ve got a tastey dose of usual suspects, mixed with some new stuff (Oscar Peterson to Buck 65), and for the second hour: ALL Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings.
Once again, it’s all on vinyl record tonight. Tune in for what I promise will be a more-fantastic-than-usual show, from 4:00 to 6:00 on Regina Community Radio – 91.3 FM in Regina or http://cjtr.ca/webcast/

There was a recent flurry of media activity surrounding the release of Jamaica To Toronto, a compilation that exposes the “lost” history of R&B and soul music in Canada. The CD, released on American indie label Light in the Attic, collects recordings by Canadian-based R&B singers in the ’60s and ’70s. Toronto had experienced a wave of Caribbean and West Indian immigration that resulted in a highly charged music scene, and straight-up soul was the order of the day. Current press has marvelled at the fact that these soul artists even existed and how much they influenced the contemporary Canadian sound.
Well, people still turn on the radio, of course, but it’s a much different beast than it once was. The radio was the common person’s biggest or only connection to the outside world. Well, I’m not going to take you back to the ’30s tonight, but I do promise to give you a nice dose from the old school of radio play.
As you may already be aware, the last show of every month is Long-Play Wednesday. While I enjoy every show I get to do at Regina Community Radio, it’s my favourite show of each month, by far! It’s an enormous pain hauling 20-30 LPs around on the bus (I’ve got to take them to work in the morning, then to the station, then home), but it’s worth every step to hear that sweet warm sound playing over the air.
Tune in from 4:00 to 6:00 for an all-vinyl program covering folk/country, jazz, pop, dub, funk and a swinging good time!

Life just gets better and better!
To call Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings “soul revivalists” would be missing the point, as the hard-working crew, fronted by the lovable Sharon Jones, wouldn’t have you believe the genre ever died. Still reeling from the release of their excellent 2010 effort, I Learned the Hard Way, the group have announced another monstrous tour throughout North America.
Let’s talk about live music for a moment, shall we?
Over the course of my life, I’ve had some amazing opportunities to see some incredible performances. Some of them are the biggest of big names, while others are just local bands of friends who put together something tight. One way or another, I’ve seen a lot of live concerts and as we freeze our various unmentionables off, what better way to fantasize about warmer days – outdoor summer festivals, buskers, sunshine, food, drinks and fun – than with good music.
I’ll never be able to fit it all into one hour, but I’ve got a list of about 30 names from which to choose, covering piano pop, cool jazz, funk, folk singer/songwriter, rock… oh man! I can’t wait!
